1. Set a study schedule — block 90 minutes/day, 5 days/week. Put it in your calendar with a Zoom-style meeting name so colleagues don't book over it.
2. Build alongside the videos — don't just watch. Fork a real open-source repo (Sauce Demo, Restful-Booker, or the Playwright samples) and add tests as you learn.
3. Complete every assignment — completion is where retention happens. Passive video watching gives you ~15% recall; graded assignments give 60%+.

5. Take the certification exam within 30 days of finishing — retention decays fast. Book the exam before you feel ready; the deadline forces the last-mile prep.

• "Guaranteed job in 30 days" claims — no legitimate provider offers this. Springboard, TripleTen, Careerist all cap guarantees at 6–12 months with strict conditions.
• Selenium 3 curriculum in 2026 — Selenium 4 has been out since 2021. Skip.
• No mention of CI/CD or version control — a modern QA course must cover Git and GitHub Actions basics.
• Zero community access — no Slack, Discord, or live Q&A means you're on your own when stuck.
• Instructor with no LinkedIn or GitHub — you can't verify their experience.
• "Lifetime access" as the main selling point — you won't watch it in year 2. Recency of content matters more.

The certificate itself is worth 0% at the negotiation table — the positioning is worth 5–15%. Script we've seen work in 2026:

"Since we last spoke I've completed ISTQB Foundation and AWS Cloud Practitioner, which the JD lists as preferred. Based on Levels.fyi and my own market checks with three offers in hand, mid-level QA with these certs and 4 years experience is trending at ₹14–16 LPA / $115–130k. Can we align the offer within that band?"

1. Certificate collecting without shipping code — 10 certs and 0 GitHub commits is a red flag, not a green one.
2. Choosing the cheapest course — cheap often means outdated. Value > price.
3. Not finishing — online course completion rates sit at 8–15%. Be in the top decile.
4. Skipping the exam — a course without the exam does not appear on LinkedIn's Certifications section, which is what recruiters filter on.

1. Define your goal — career change → bootcamp; promotion → advanced cert (ISTQB CTAL-TM); resume filter-pass → ISTQB + AWS.
2. Match cert to industry — finance/regulated: ISTQB; healthcare: ISTQB + HIPAA/GDPR; e-commerce: ISTQB + CP-SAT; startups: portfolio > certs.
3. Verify employer recognition — search 30 real job posts for your target role and count how many mention the cert. If <5, skip it.
