Katalon Studio shows up in many QA job posts, especially for teams that mix manual testers and automation engineers. This review explains what it does, what each plan includes, where it fits and where a coded framework is the better choice. Everything here comes from Katalon's public pages, read on 26 October 2026. We did not run a paid licence, so there are no speed numbers or scores. See also our Katalon directory entry and the mabl vs Testim vs Katalon comparison.

What is Katalon Studio?

Katalon Studio is a desktop application for writing and running automated tests. Under the hood, web tests use Selenium and mobile tests use Appium, but you don't have to set up either framework yourself. It sits inside Katalon's wider platform:

  • Katalon Studio for writing tests.
  • TestOps for test management, coverage and release reports.
  • TestCloud for running suites in parallel on cloud browsers and devices.
  • TrueTest for seeing how real users move through the product.

This review focuses on Studio, which is what most testers mean by "Katalon".

Three ways to write a test

The main selling point is that one project supports several skill levels:

  1. Record: the web and mobile recorders capture clicks, taps and typing and turn them into steps.
  2. Keywords: build steps from a list such as Open browser, Click, Set text, Verify text, each linked to a saved object.
  3. Code: switch to the script view and write Groovy, including your own custom keywords.

A typical keyword test looks like this:

#KeywordObject / input
1Open browserstorefront/checkout
2Set texttxt_CardAmount = 120.00
3Clickbtn_PlaceOrder
4Verify textlbl_OrderTotal = 120.00

Objects live in a shared repository, so when a button changes you fix the locator once. Learn the underlying idea in our Page Object Model guide.

AI features

Paid plans include Katalon AI: generating test cases and scripts from a Jira ticket or written requirement, explaining scripts, naming the likely cause of a failed run and self-healing broken locators during a run. Healed changes are reported for approval, which is the right design. Admins can switch AI off, and Enterprise can connect your own AI provider. A newer MCP server lets coding assistants create and run Katalon tests. None of these AI features are in the free edition.

Who Katalon suits

Good fit:

  • Teams of manual testers moving into automation alongside a few engineers.
  • Projects that need web, mobile, API and Windows desktop tests in one place.
  • Companies that need on-premises deployment or control over AI.
  • Learners who want to try automation concepts with the free edition.

Weaker fit:

  • Developer-heavy teams happy writing Playwright or Selenium code in their own repo.
  • Small budgets that need CI runs, since that means paid add-ons.
  • Teams who want tests in TypeScript or Python rather than Groovy.

Katalon vs a coded framework

QuestionKatalon StudioPlaywright / Selenium

Who writes testsRecorder, keywords or GroovyCode (TypeScript, Java, Python and others)

Neither is "better". Katalon trades licence cost and some control for a faster start and a lower skill barrier.

Should you learn Katalon for your career?

It is worth knowing if your target companies list it, and the free edition plus Katalon Academy make that easy. But treat it as a layer on top of real skills: locators, waits, assertions, API checks and CI. Those transfer everywhere. Practise them with our Selenium interview questions, API testing interview questions and Playwright interview questions, then rehearse explaining your framework choices in the QA Community.

Our verdict

Katalon Studio is a strong fit for mixed-skill teams that want web, mobile, API and desktop testing in one tool, with code available when recording isn't enough. The trade-offs are a paid licence for full features, separate add-ons for CI and cloud runs, and a project format tied to the tool. Compare it with our Testsigma review and ACCELQ, and browse more options in the testing tools directory.

Key features

  • No-code, low-code (built-in keywords) and full-code (Groovy) authoring in one project
  • Web and mobile recorders that produce Selenium-based and Appium-based tests
  • REST, SOAP and GraphQL API tests in the same project as UI tests
  • Windows desktop testing with a native recorder (paid plans)
  • Data-driven testing; Professional adds JDBC databases and data binding
  • Cucumber / Gherkin behaviour-driven tests (paid plans)
  • AI script generation, failure root-cause analysis and self-healing locators (paid plans)
  • MCP server so coding assistants can create and run Katalon tests (paid plans)
  • Integrations with Git, Jira, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab and Slack

Pros

  • Mixed-skill teams can work on the same tests: manual testers record, engineers add code.
  • Web, mobile, API and desktop in one tool and one report.
  • A usable free edition for learning and small local projects.
  • On-premises deployment and optional AI for strict security teams on Enterprise.
  • Free Katalon Academy courses and an active community.

Cons

  • CI and cloud runs are separate add-ons on top of the main licence.
  • Key features (parallel runs, desktop testing, self-healing, BDD) are missing from the free edition.
  • Groovy and Katalon's project format are less portable than a plain Playwright or Selenium repo.
  • A heavy desktop application compared with lightweight code-only frameworks.

Alternatives to consider

  • Testsigma

Cloud-based codeless platform with plain-English steps.

  • ACCELQ

Codeless automation for web, API and enterprise apps.

  • Tricentis

    Enterprise model-based automation (Tosca).

  • Ranorex

Low-code tool known for Windows desktop testing.

  • Playwright

Free, open-source coded framework; no licence, more coding.

How we researched this

Method

  • Read Katalon's public plan comparison table and Katalon Studio product page on the check date.
  • Listed only features the vendor shows publicly; we did not run a paid licence or measure speed.
  • Compared the approach with coded frameworks we teach on this site and with other low-code tools in our directory.

Evidence and research notes

  • Plan names and feature-by-plan table read from katalon.com on 26 Oct 2026.
  • Recorder, API and AI feature descriptions read from katalon.com/katalon-studio on the same day; vendor customer counts and review scores are not repeated.

We do not give star ratings or scores. Read our editorial policy.

Key takeaways

  1. 1One project can hold web, mobile, API and desktop tests, written with a recorder, keywords or full code.
  2. 2The Free edition supports local authoring, basic record and playback and up to 40 static test suites.
  3. 3Katalon has a Free edition plus Professional and Enterprise plans; CI runs and cloud browsers are separate add-ons.
  4. 4Running from the command line or CI needs Katalon Runtime Engine add-ons; cloud runs need TestCloud add-ons.
  5. 5Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, audit logs, on-premises or private cloud deployment and bring-your-own AI provider.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the free edition can run in CI. Headless and pipeline runs need a Runtime Engine licence.
  • Recording everything and never refactoring. Recorded steps need shared objects and reusable keywords to stay maintainable.
  • Accepting every AI self-healing change without review. Check what changed, or a healed locator can hide a real bug.
  • Treating Katalon as a replacement for learning code. Groovy scripting is what unlocks custom keywords and complex logic.

Interview tips

  • 1Be ready to explain the Object Repository, test cases, test suites and profiles, and how you keep locators stable.
  • 2If asked to compare it with Selenium or Playwright, talk about trade-offs: faster start and mixed-skill teams versus a paid licence and less control.

Frequently asked questions

1.Is Katalon Studio free?
There is a free edition for local authoring and running with basic record and playback and up to 40 static suites. Parallel runs, desktop testing, AI features and integrations need the paid Professional plan.
2.Does Katalon use Selenium?
Yes. Katalon describes its web recorder as producing Selenium-based tests and its mobile recorder as producing Appium-based tests, so you get those engines without building a framework yourself.
3.What language does Katalon use for scripting?
Groovy, which runs on Java. You can stay with the recorder and keywords, or switch to the script view to write custom code.
