How we calculated this, and what our own posting data shows
How we calculated this
We take the US-located and US-remote requisitions in our Jobs Radar index, tag the tooling wording in each, and read the pay from the postings that publish a range — which US pay-transparency laws now make far more common than in our other regions. The resulting band is reconciled against US BLS series 15-1253 and Levels.fyi company data before we publish it.

Tooling named in US QA/SDET postings

What our US posting sample says about the 2026 QA band
The US slice is small — 49 postings — but it is the slice where employers are legally nudged into telling the truth about pay, so it is worth reading carefully. The tooling split is the first surprise: Selenium and manual-first scope tie at 16 postings each, Playwright is close behind at 14, and Cypress reaches 9. Compare that to our India slice, where Cypress barely registers, and you get the real regional difference. US teams are more likely to be running a JavaScript-native stack owned by the product engineers rather than a separate Java automation team.
That ownership model is what actually sets US QA pay in 2026. Roles written as 'test the product' cluster near the bottom of the band; roles written as 'own the test infrastructure the product engineers use' clear it. In our sample, 36 of the 49 postings put automation duties in scope, and those are the ones that reference CI, environments, or release gating in the same paragraph. The band gap between the two framings is wider than the gap between two adjacent seniority levels within either one.
Location has stopped being a clean multiplier. Only 7 of these 49 postings carry a California address, and a meaningful share of the rest are remote-eligible with a geo-adjusted band written directly into the ad. That means the old advice — move to the coast — has been partly replaced by a narrower question: does this employer band by location, by level, or by both? Ask it in the first call, because it determines whether negotiating your level or negotiating your zone is the higher-leverage move.
Treat the number on this page as a planning band and pressure-test it against a specific segment: the manual-first picture in our US manual tester salary guide and the distributed-team picture in our remote SDET salary data. Where the three disagree, the disagreement itself is the useful signal.
The QA testing salary in the USA in 2026 ranges from $65,000 base for a manual QA tester in a low-cost state to $400,000+ Total Compensation for a Principal SDET at FAANG in the Bay Area. This guide consolidates reported 2026 pay across every experience band, state, remote/on-site split, and specialization — cross-referenced against Levels.fyi, BLS OES data, live listings on the SoftwareTestPilot QA Jobs Radar, and direct engineer disclosures.
If you're negotiating a US QA offer in 2026 — or benchmarking against remote-friendly cities — this is your single source of truth.

5. Remote vs On-Site QA Pay in the USA (2026)
Post-2024, most US tech employers use geo-adjusted pay bands — remote hires in low-cost states typically receive 85-90% of the Bay Area / NYC band, not full parity. Notable exceptions (GitLab, Automattic, Zapier, HashiCorp) still pay flat national bands. Full analysis: Remote SDET Salary in USA and QA Testing Jobs from Home.
6. How to Cross $180K Base as a QA in the USA
- Move from QA Engineer → SDET title — same tasks, +30% base band.
- Own the CI/CD gating pipeline — visible cross-team leverage; the fastest path to Senior.
- Playwright + TypeScript in production replaces Selenium — recruiters explicitly filter for this in 2026.
- Contribute observability — Datadog / Grafana synthetics tests. Adds "SRE-adjacent" to your resume.
- Interview at 3 companies in parallel every 18-24 months. Competing offers move base by 15-25%.
