The Test Architect designs the blueprint every tester and SDET builds on — frameworks, environments, quality strategy as code.

Last updated: January 2026

Test Architect Role Overview

Test Architects set the technical direction for testing across many teams. They design frameworks, pick tooling, define quality strategy, and review test architecture in design docs alongside production architects.

Common responsibilities

  • Design test framework architecture (UI, API, contract, performance)
  • Set tooling standards and language choices across teams
  • Architect test environments, test data services, and ephemeral infra
  • Write RFCs and quality strategy docs
  • Review design docs alongside production architects
  • Coach SDETs and unblock framework-level decisions

Test Architect Interview Preparation

Three topic buckets that appear in nearly every Test Architect interview loop.

Technical topics

  • Design a test architecture for 50+ microservices
  • Pick a stack for a greenfield team and defend it
  • Test environment strategy: ephemeral vs shared
  • Observability for tests — what would you instrument?

Scenario-based topics

  • Two teams want different frameworks — how do you decide?
  • Migrate 300 Selenium tests to Playwright without breaking releases
  • Design contract testing rollout for a 20-team org

Behavioral questions

  • An RFC you wrote that changed how the org tests
  • Influencing a director-level engineering decision
  • A failed architecture choice and what you learned
