How to Use This Kit
Use the first pass to answer each question aloud before reading the answer. On the second pass, mark questions where your answer lacks a practical example. For senior interviews, connect each topic to a real project, failure mode, tradeoff, or debugging story. Suggested 7-day revision: Day 1 Fundamentals + Status Codes; Day 2 JSON + Security; Day 3 Postman + Test Design; Day 4 Automation; Day 5 Microservices + Contracts; Day 6 Performance + CI/CD; Day 7 Real Scenarios + mock
2. What should you validate in every API response?
At minimum validate status code, response body, schema or structure, headers, data types, mandatory fields, business rules, response time, and error behavior. For state-changing APIs, also verify the backend state or follow-up GET response. 3. Explain the difference between REST and HTTP. HTTP is the transport protocol used to send requests and responses. REST is an architectural style that commonly uses HTTP methods, resource-oriented URLs, stateless communication, and representations such as JSON. An API can use HTTP without strictly following REST. 4. What makes an API RESTful? A RESTful API models resources with clear URIs, uses standard HTTP semantics, is stateless, supports
6. When would you use GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE?
GET reads, POST usually creates or triggers processing, PUT replaces a resource or performs an idempotent full update, PATCH partially updates, and DELETE removes. The exact contract should be documented because real systems sometimes use these methods differently. 7. What is idempotency? An operation is idempotent when repeating the same request has the same intended effect as sending it once. GET, PUT, and DELETE are generally expected to be idempotent. POST is not necessarily idempotent unless the API supports an idempotency key. 8. Why does idempotency matter to testers? Networks retry requests. Without idempotency, a retried payment or order request can create duplicates. Test repeated submissions, timeout-and-retry flows, duplicate idempotency keys, and concurrent retries to confirm
